Willowbank Raceway - General News: FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND BRING SUCCESS FOR LOCALS, GM MANIA

FATHER’S DAY WEEKEND BRING SUCCESS FOR LOCALS, GM MANIA

9 September 2014

Father’s Day weekend at Willowbank Raceway – Queensland’s premier drag racing facility – was an action-packed affair, with both the latest round of the Street Series and the second-running of GM Mania getting revved up over the weekend.

On Saturday 6 September, local racers took to the track for the latest round of the Street Series, with Craig Vogler (Street Eliminator), Cameron Martin (Quick Eliminator), Richard Maddern (Hot Street), Ken Rice (Street Bike) and Tammy Goldthorpe (Powder Puff) taking victory.

For reigning and three-time QDRC/track champion (2013, 2005 and 2004) and 2004 Street Series Powder Puff champion Goldthorpe, it was a win she has been wishing for.

“It was the second time on my new Street Series GSXR 1000 bike, so I am still getting used to it. I had a bit of luck go my way which was always good and I will definitely take that, and I was pretty happy with my lights across the event,” said Goldthorpe.

“I have had a pretty hard year this year – I was sitting in eighth spot heading in to this weekend so I needed that win to secure my spot in the top eight. With one meeting to go I think I should have that secured now, so I am pretty happy with that.

“A big thanks has to go to Denis (Ryan) for letting me ride his bike, and my little boy Tom for cheering me on. I am certainly looking forward to the rest of the Street Series season.”

The Street Series will next be on-track on Saturday 4 October, for its last full round of racing before the top eight hit the track on 21 and 24 October to find the 2014 Street Series Champions. For full event information,

On Sunday 7 September, impressive vehicles and GM enthusiasts poured in to the Ipswich facility for the second-running of GM Mania – celebrating all things ‘GM’ with on and off-track activities.

“The second-running of the GM Mania was a great day out and capped off what was already a great weekend out here at the track,” said Willowbank Raceway CEO Tony Manson.

“With beautiful weather and amazing vehicles on display both on and off the track, it was a perfect event for GM enthusiasts.

“We can’t wait to host this event again next year, as we continue to grow and improve the event year to year.”

Also coming up at Willowbank Raceway is the penultimate round of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship (QDRC). On 11 October racers across the QDRC SuperComp, QDRC Comp Bike, Donnelly Blasting Services QDRC Outlaws, Knijff Earthmoving Modified, Powercruise Super Sedan, Prime Signs/Speed Elec Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster and Super Gas categories will do their best to make sure they are in the best possible positon for QDRC glory heading in to the final round of the Championship, to be held on 15 November.
