Willowbank Raceway - General News: MOPARS ROAR AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY

MOPARS ROAR AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY

29 July 2014

Around 2500 enthusiasts headed to Willowbank Raceway at the weekend for the 12th running of Mopar Sunday.

While wet weather saw the latest round of the Street Series unfortunately abandoned the day before, Sunday saw beautiful blue skies greet the Mopar Sunday flock as they enjoyed a great day out both on and off the track.

Taking on-track victories were Gary Smith (0-10.99 seconds), Shane Cattle (11.00-12.99 seconds), Greg McMahon (13.00-14.99 seconds) and Soni Tyson (15+ seconds).

Off-track the praise flowed for Jodi Wilson (Top Aussie Coupe/Charger and Top Paint), Bob Hamilton (Top US Mopar and Top Engine Bay), John Masterton (Top Sedan), Jason Wendt (Top Commercial), Alan Visser (Top Show Car Original), Rolf Kadinsky (Top Show Car Original and Unrestored), Zane Hau (Top Show Car Modified), Zane Black (Best Modern 4/6 cyl), David Compton (Best Modern 8 cyl), Barbara Sherrard (Top Jeep Original) and Eugene Schledewitz (Top Jeep Modified/Extreme) in the Surf City Show ‘n’ Shine, while Eric Sheppard (V8 naturally aspirated), Paul Kelsall (V8 blown), Stephen Kopp (6 cyl naturally aspirated) and Jon Bannink (4 cyl naturaly aspirated) took out the Dyno competition.

Next up on the ‘marque-enthusiasts’ agenda will be the third one-make event of 2014 for Willowbank Raceway – GM Mania, set to hit the track on Sunday 7 September.

Before it does however the next round of the Street Series will hit the track the day before (Saturday 6 September), just one week after Australia’s largest automotive lifestyle event – the Brisbane Jamboree - comes to town on Saturday 30 August, providing a perfect finish to a busy August which will also include Nostalgia Drag Racing (Sunday 10 August) and the latest round of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship (Saturday 16 August).

Willowbank Raceway CEO Tony Manson said it was an exciting time for the venue.

“We are very proud that we are able to host the GT Falcon Owner’s Club All Ford Day, the weekend’s Mopar Sunday and the upcoming Jamboree and GM Mania for Queensland’s automotive enthusiasts,” said Manson.

“With on and off track elements celebrating all facets of the automotive lifestyle, events like these allow us to present a wider range of experience to our spectators and our racing community.

“At the same time, we still get a more traditional racing fix with the Nostalgia Drag Racing Series and the QDRC both hitting the track during August, and the latest round of the Street Series sharing a weekend with GM Mania – making for a varied and exciting line-up over the coming six weeks at Willowbank Raceway.”
