Willowbank Raceway - General News: QUARTER-MILE SEASON SET TO TAKE-OFF THIS WEEKEND AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY

QUARTER-MILE SEASON SET TO TAKE-OFF THIS WEEKEND AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY

25 October 2012

Following a massive month in circuit racing which included the Bathurst 1000 and locally the Gold Coast 600, it is time for Queensland’s motorsport enthusiasts to turn their attentions to the quarter mile with the state’s premier drag racing facility kicking off its season this weekend.

The first outing for Willowbank Raceway’s 2012/2013 drag racing season will get underway this Saturday 27 October 2012, with the Super Sportsman event expected to host almost 100 racers across nine brackets in a two-part event.

Part One of the event will be a round of the Track Championships for Modified, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster and Super Gas. SuperComp & Supercharged Outlaws will qualify at 10am, 12pm and 2pm with part two of the event featuring a combination of vehicles from Modified, Super Sedan, Super Gas and Super Street.

Willowbank Raceway Managing Director Steve Bettes said he was excited to see another season of drag racing at the Ipswich facility get underway.

“It certainly has been a massive month for motorsport fans, especially those based in Queensland with the Gold Coast event on the weekend!” said Bettes.

“With our competitive season kicking off this Saturday, hopefully we can add some quarter-mile flavour to the mix for the motorsport fans of South East Queensland this weekend.

“Tickets are just $20 with children 13 and under gaining free entry, and we are looking forward to hosting almost 100 racers across nine brackets.

“As the first event for the season, you can be assured these racers will be going all out to get their title chases off to the best start possible!”

Amongst those to keep an eye on are Peter Zelow (Super Comp), Paul Doeblien (Powercruise Super Sedan), Daniel Sekli (Modified Bike), Dale Duffy (Donnelly Blasting Services Junior Dragster) and Simon Isherwood (Super Gas), who will all be returning to defend their 2011/2012 Track Champion status in their respective brackets.

Prime Signs/Speed Elec Super Street Track champion Rob Harrington will also be returning, however he will making a jump to the Knijff Earthmoving Modified category in a USA-built ‘spitzer’ modified dragster.

“Harrington will definitely be one to watch with his super quick dragster expected to lead the qualifying with 7.1 second elapsed times,” said Bettes.

“Also making a switch is Jake Donnelly, who will make his ‘big car’ track championship debut on Saturday after stepping up to Powercruise Super Sedan from the Donnelly Blasting Services Junior Dragster class to race alongside his older brother Daniel.

“Other names to watch include Luke Marsden, Matthew McKnight and Grant Fraser in Allstar Batteries Supercharged Outlaws and Tony Bellert, Tim Sizmur and Dave Tucker in Super Comp – these brackets always provide fantastic title battles!”
